KARIMA PALAFOX HONORED IN THE FIRST-EVER 40 UNDER 40 BY THE URBAN LAND INSTITUTE

Representing the best young land use professionals from around the globe

NEW YORK (Oct 21, 2014) Managing Partner and Senior Urban Planner of Palafox Associates EnP Karima Patricia Palafox has been recognized by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) as one of the Urban Land 40 Under 40, which represent the best young land use professionals from around the globe. Karima is the only Southeast Asian honored at the program.

“They are demonstrating outstanding leadership in all areas of real estate: design, development, finance, planning, sustainability, public policy, and academia," said ULI Global Chairman Lynn Thurber during the institute’s 2014 Fall Meeting in New York City. 

Karima heads a multidisciplinary team for Palafox Associates and its architecture arm, Palafox Architecture. She has also been at the forefront of discussions on laws that would affect development in the Philippines and advises the chair of the country’s Senate Committee on Urban Planning, Housing, and Resettlement. 

Karima earned her Master’s degree in Industrial Economics at the University of Asia and the Pacific and her Master of Science degree in Urban Planning with specialization in Urban Design at Oxford Brookes University. 

Some of her fellow awardees are Bjarke Ingels of BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, Kate Brown of Grosvenor, Youngmin Chang of CityNet, James Lu of Perkins and Will, Craig Robinson of Colliers, Christopher Tynan of Morgan Stanley, Douglass Karp of New England Development, Bryan K. Chan of Shui on Land, Sophie Walker of JLL, and Serena Wolfe of EY, among others.

“These leaders represent those who are pushing the envelope, who are embracing new approaches to improve the built environment," adds ULI Global Chief Executive Officer Patrick Phillips.
More than 400 nominations around the world have been received for this inaugural class as selected by members of the Urban Land Institute. Each winner will be profiled in a special section of Urban Land magazine’s November-December issue. 

ULI Philippines, led by Mr. Charlie Rufino (Chairman and Global Trustee), also bagged two major awards at the Fall Meeting. The ULI Philippines national council received USD 20,000 through Kresge Foundation. ULI Philippines proposed “A Resilient and Healthy Bonifacio Global City (BGC)” aiming to create a comprehensive plan for BGC and to help the community become more resilient to natural disasters and establish benchmarks for resilience across the country.

Meanwhile, The Zuellig Building, the Philippines’ only entry was declared a winner for the 2014 ULI Global Awards for Excellence. The LEED Platinum building is noted for its world-class, sustainable design.

Joining Karima at the Urban Land reception hosted by Grimshaw Architects in New York are Ar. Felino and Mrs. Wilma Palafox, who have shown full support of their daughter in her latest achievement.  Jun and Karima also visited the Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) office while in New York, by invitation of legendary architect Eugene Kohn.
